Case Study 1: Electrostatic Discharge Sensitive

Electro Static Discharge Sensitive

Avant Air Solutions is an ANO-145 approved organization with both Class A and Class C rating for the maintenance of aircraft and its part. The organization was previously carrying out maintenance on Boeing 737 and Boeing 747 aircraft until recently the scope was extended to carry out maintenance on Boeing 777 and Airbus A320 aircrafts having new generation electronics equipment installed in them with Very large scale integration on Built In ICs and system computers.

It is the fourth time same electronic card has been declared unserviceable by the line maintenance and has been brought into the shop facility for check. This time again the IC was found damaged. The most obvious reason is the Electrostatic Discharge on the component. The company has spent a big amount already to buy all the supportive equipment required for the protection of ESDS devices. However, the electrostatic discharge is still destroying the components and costing a lot of maintenance and repeated defects which are adding up to the downtime of the aircraft.

Identify all the possible reasons and root cause analysis to help the organization in improving its handling of ESDS components. Mention any special equipment needed as well as the procedure to check the serviceability of this equipment. Also mention any procedure that might need to be improved or modified in the Maintenance Exposition Manual to avoid such happenings in the future.

You will identify at least following:

1. ESDS requirements for component storage, component replacement, and component shipment.
2. ESDS requirements for components removal/installation and maintenance in shop.
3. Training requirements if any.
