Sub Module 7.17: Aircraft Jacking

 EASA MODULE 7A
Sub Module 7.17
AIRCRAFT HANDLING AND STORAGE

 AIRCRAFT JACKING:

Aircraft may need to be jacked for a variety of purposes. These may include component changes, retraction tests, weighing of the aircraft and aircraft rigging checks. Care needs to be taken when jacking, to avoid damage to aircraft or equipment. Jacking points are provided in the wings and fuselage, at strong points, to enable the whole aircraft to be lifted, and there are, usually, other points, at the nose and main undercarriages, to enable individual wheels to be changed.

Some aircraft require a jacking pad to be fitted to each jacking point, while in some, the jacking pads are built into the structure. Special jacking adapters and beams may be available to lift individual axles.

In all instances, the Maintenance Manual should be consulted, so that the correct equipment and procedures may be used. Because of the position of the jacking points, the C.G. of some aircraft may be well behind, or in front of, the main jacking points. It may be necessary to add ballast forward or rear of the jacking points or to check the fuel load of the aircraft, to bring the centre of gravity within safe limits as specified in the
Maintenance Manual.

JACKING PRECAUTIONS:
As a safety precaution, small aircraft should normally be jacked inside a hangar. Larger aircraft may be jacked outside, provided they are positioned nose into wind; the jacking surface is level and strong enough to support the weight, and that any special instructions, stated in the Maintenance Manual, are observed.

A maximum wind speed, stated for jacking outside, can also be found within the Maintenance Manual. The aircraft to be jacked should be chocked fore and aft and the brakes positioned to OFF (brakes released). If the brakes are inadvertently left in the ON position (brakes applied) stress could be introduced to the landing gear or to the aircraft structure, due to weight redistribution as the aircraft is raised.

Aircraft jacks should always be positioned correctly and the load raised and lowered gradually. All jacks should be stored in the fully retracted position, kept clean and free from corrosion. Moving parts should be lubricated regularly and the jack should be exercised if it is not used frequently. Jack replenishment is usually through the air valve, up to the level of the bottom of the air valve. Low oil level is indicated by inability to lift to maximum height, whilst over-filling is indicated by leakage of oil when the jack is fully extended.

EASA MODULE 7 ESSAY QUESTION:

Write down the procedure for jacking of an Aircraft.

(Note: write 3-4 paragraphs in comment section below)

Comments

  1. Jacking is the process of lifting the aircraft for some maintenance. There are 4 types of jacks, pillar, bipod, tripod and quadropod.
To start the jacking we should ensure that there is oil so that the aircraft should be lifted easily. If level of oil is more than requirement then it will leak.when we start jacking we should also check that the jack is correct for that pad.The procedure for jacking is that there are people who will ensure that the person is doing jacking correct.otherwise if a person did wrong jacking then there will be inbalance in the aircraft. All members are doing communication through telephone. It is to ensure that the chocks should be removed when we start jacking. And we also have to ensure that the CG point is within the limits. The jacking ramp will fit in the pad.And then we will also do locking of the ramp.there is locking collar we will also do locking and when all the ramp is opened then we will lock that collar tightly. To emsure that the jacking is correct we will check the balancing of the aircraft and the weight is fully distributed on the legs of the jack.Through Jacking the aircraft should be raised slowly not with the speed. Before doing jacking we should ensure that the weight on wheel circuit breaker is offf or removed.
All the jacking process is done by seeing the AMM.

Place Safety Barriers in position around the aircraft.Place warning notices in the aircraft cockpit.Ensure that Ground Safety Locks are fitted to all Landing Gears, Wheel Chocks are fitted Ensure the Brakes are applied and the aircraft is balanced and stable.Deactivate the relevant circuit breakers to ensure that there will be no movement of flight controls. Fit Jacking Pads and Adaptors
Position the jacks under the aircraft just taking a little of the aircraft weight.Remove Wheel Chocks Release the Brakes.Clear the area around the aircraft of all ground support and maintenance equipment and ensure that no other work is being carried out.
Operate the nose jack if necessary to ensure the aircraft is longitudinally stable.
Slowly operate the jacks at the same time to keep the aircraft level until the appropriate clearance is achieved between the main landing gear wheels and the ground Ensure that throughout the jacking operations the jack Safety Locking
On completion of all jack raising operations the aircraft should be levelled to the datum position the jack Safety Locking Collars tightened and the aircraft made stable by the fitting of trestles or a safety stay.

    1. please try to write complete sentences that explains what you want to say. for example, instead of writing " Fit Jacking Pads and Adaptors" you should write " we must ensure that the aircraft is being jacked using the correct adapter and pad as approved by the manufacturer so that the aircraft structure will not be damaged during the jacking"...

similarly "Remove Wheel Chocks Release the Brakes" ko b zada explanatory way may likho.

safety collar kysy use krna hy ye b nai btaya aap ny,

end line: incorrect, because trestle is only used when the aircraft is jacked.

      keep working hard.

Jacking procedure is a procedure in which we lift the Aircraft up to do inspection of Engine and landing gears , this procedure is done by doing following steps
place safety barriers in position around the aircraft and place warning notices in the aircraft cockpit after that
ensure that ground safety locks are fitted to all landing gears which ensure wheel chocks are fitted ensure and the brakes are applied after that ensure that the aircraft is balanced and stable then deactivate the relevant circuit breakers to ensure that there will be no movement of flight controls or the operation of other in-flight systems ,fit jacking pads and adaptors,
position the jacks under the aircraft, just taking a little of the aircraft’s weight after that
remove wheel chocks and then release the brakes then slowly operate the jacks at the same time to keep the aircraft level until the appropriate clearance is achieved between the main landing gear wheels and the ground and put the load cells to calculate the weight and ensure that the aircraft is to be in center of gravity.
On completion of all jack raising operations the aircraft should be levelled and slowly down to its original position.

  4. Jacking is a necessity for an aircraft for changing any equipments and safe flying.

Jacking procedure involves a team of members who are appointed to do different work, just as one member should be co-ordinating the operation and one should control each jacking point. On larger aircrafts we may use leveling stations so it will also need monitoring, all members should be in communication with each other via a radio or telephone. Checks will have to be made of aircrafts for its weight fuel and center of gravity abour it being in the specified limits. Aircrafts nose should be pointed towards the wing and chocks should be applied forwards and backwards of the aircraft, breaks should be off and undercarriage ground locks should be installed. We should make sure that there is adequate clearance for lifting cranes or other equipment. We will have to use jacking pads to remove the danger of damaging aircraft.
We should slowly and gradually raise the jack rather then suddenly raising and same should happen when lowering the jack. We will have to use a jacking collar which is attached manually for further protection during jacking which will not let the jack slide down if any failures occur.

Jacking helps us solve a lot of problems when removing or installing different components in the aircraft.

  5. Aircraft jacking is important for some purposes component replacement weighing of aircraft and for some retraction test.
Following safe procedures is given for aircraft jacking
.Most important one person co-ordinate the operation and other person control the jacking point at which the aircraft connect the jack. They also communicate with each other with radio etc
.Before jacking read the aircraft manual and ensure its fuel state and CG point of the aircraft. All work perform according to the manufacturer manual otherwise it is harmful for staff and aircraft
.Must be ensured before jacking earth cable be connect to the earth point
.Jacking pads should attach the aircraft to protect the aircraft for damaging it’s structure
.After the jack attached check the jacking point to ensure the jack are adjust properly according to aircraft maintenance manual
.After the jacking positioned remove the chocks and jacking in progress the locking collar wound down and then close to the body of jack.
.when jacking complete some support provided to aircraft wing according to aircraft manual.

  6. Aircraft Jack's are used for raising and lowering of the aircraft and not be used to sustain the aircraft in the air for long period of time.

To ensure the safety of the aircraft while jacking safety precautions should be followed. One person should be beside each jacking point to control the jacking equipment. And one person is to supervise all the personnel. If the aircraft is large so radio or cellphones should be used for communication. Checks should be made o aircraft weight, its fuel and centre of gravity. When the aircraft is on the ground chokes should be on fore and aft of the aircraft and brakes released, its nose should be in front of of wind. It is vital to connect earth cable to the earth point on aircraft. Jacking pads should be used.

Before jacking commences Jack's should be removed. Aircraft should be raised evenly from each side when jacking. Locking point should always be close to jacking surface. When fully jacked it should be fully tightened down.

Jacking should be done according to the relevant maintenance manual.

  7. Jacking of aircraft is done in order to perform inspections and maintenances .

While jacking the aircraft a team is to be made to coordinate with each other through radio telecommunication methods one team member should be inside the aircraft and the other one is to be with the jacking tools .
Aircraft must be chocked aft and fore to restrict the motion of aircraft.
Pads and adapters are to be used while jacking the aircraft to ensure the safety of the aircraft .
Load cells must also be included while having pad and adapters.
Trestles should also be there as they provide support to the jacking equipments.
Locking collars are used to lock the jacks to restrict its movement.
Checks of fuel state aircraft weight and centre of gravity should be made to ensured that they are in their specified limits or not.
After the required inpections and maintenances that we did in aircraft using jacking procedures now we have to remove all the things we’ve added in the jacking procedures.
Firstly we have to remove the locking collar, pads ,adapters and trestles. Then we have to lower the jacking equipment to place the aircraft in its own position.

Jacking should be done by the qualified engineers or personnel’s with recommended methods of specific Maintenance Manuals

  8. Jacking process can be used for various reasons in aviation, for changing wheels, installation or removal of a component, weighing an aircraft, etc.
When jacking an aircraft one person should supervise the communication and other should be on the jacking controls point. Inspection of aircraft levelling station should be made and every member of the team should be connected with its supervisor through telecommunication or radio.
Inspection of weight and position of Center of gravity must be done. Wheels must be chocked fore and aft, undercarriage locks must be installed and aircraft must be headed in the direction of wind.
Earth links should be connected to the relevant position on the aircraft, earthing stations. There should be adequate space and ground clearance available to use cranes and all other equipment required for a specific operation.
Jacking pads should be installed on jacking station and adapters should be installed on the jack beam. It should be made sure that jacking equipment is positioned
properly by closing release valve and making sure the adapter is positioned properly under the jacking pad and all the weight is distributed properly on every leg. Before lifting an aircraft it should be made sure that chocks are removed and aircraft is lifted as evenly as possible. Locking screw must be wounded down and kept close to the jack. When adequate height is obtained locking screw should be locked. When aircraft is lifted trestles must be placed.
Detailed procedures are written in the relevant maintenance manual and must be concerned to avoid damage or injury.

  9. We have to jack the aircrafts for many of purposes, including component changing, retractions checks etc.

For safety purpose the small aircrafts should be jacked inside the hangar not outside and larger aircrafs should be jacked outside and aircraft should be positioned towards the airflow. It should be taken into the consideration also that the jacking surface is also strong enough to support the weight to avoid any structural damage. The chocks should be used aft and fore on aircraft before jacking and brakes should be released.

There are few procedures to do effective jacking.
We should examine the weight of the aircraft, its center of gravity to make sure they are in their specified limits. While jacking aircraft should be faced towards the airflow and it should be properly chocked aft and fore and under carriage ground locks are there.
Earth cable should be connected to the earth points this is very important to avoid any hazardous event.jacking pads should be attached to the jacking points and adaptor for the jacks as required.
After adjusting the jacks we should re check that if the jacks are adjusted correctly.chocks should be removed before jacking and aircraft shoud be raised slowly.

In the jacking process the locking collar should be continually wound down, when aircrafy reaching the correct level locking collar should be tightened down.
