Aircraft Lubricants : Grease Vs Oil

Lubrication Methods:

Solid surfaces are never perfectly smooth, as the actual rubbing contact (the friction), between two moving surfaces, is concentrated on a number of high spots on the respective surfaces. Any load between the two surfaces tends to wear away these high spots until the area of contact is large enough to support the load without further deformation.

During the wearing action fragments of the surface are broken away and high local temperatures are generated. The effects are potentially dangerous, in that the fragments can cause serious damage to the surfaces while excess heat leads to expansion of the materials.

The expansion is likely to cause higher frictional forces, leading to further damage (due to more particles breaking from the surface) and can possibly result in eventual ‘seizure’ and stoppage of movement. Seizure could have disastrous results in any moving mechanism.

Lubrication is a process for reducing friction and wear, through the introduction of an unguent between two moving surfaces. The materials, commonly used for these purposes, are greases and oils.

A large number of different greases and oils are in use in aircraft maintenance. All lubricants should be kept clean and covered to keep out foreign objects. The correct quantity of the respective lubricant must, always, be used, as over-lubrication may cause all manner of problems, from contamination of electrical and mechanical equipment, to dirt and dust collecting on the lubricant residue.

Care must also be taken that lubricants do not remain in prolonged contact with unprotected skin (and particularly eyes) as many of them are severe irritants and present serious hazards to health. Hot oil also constitutes a danger to personnel.

Lubrication methods:

Grease is the preferred lubricant, in certain circumstances, for the following reasons:
Where conditions are dirty, dusty or wet, grease will provide a sealing medium, which will tend to prevent the entry of foreign matter into moving parts
  • Grease will stay in vertical bearings, whereas oil will drain away
  • Grease, packed into a bearing or housing, will provide sufficient lubrication for prolonged periods of time
  • Grease lubrication systems use much cheaper fittings, and less complicated designs than those required for oil systems.

Grease, however, has limitations in certain situations, in that grease:

  • Cannot replace oil when heat needs to be carried away
  • Cannot be used where contamination is likely to occur
  • Cannot be used where debris and contaminants have to be washed away.

Greases (as with oils), are produced to a range of specifications that depend upon the applications for which they are used. Some greases have to be water- resistant, while all have to possess good storage characteristics and be of a specific viscosity.

A grease, generally, is required to:

  •  Remain chemically stable when it is heated, and especially if that grease is to be used in bearings that are running at high temperature
  • Be thin enough to flow into applicators and spaces, whilst having the ability to remain in the desired location
  • Resist the tendency to harden at the low temperatures met at high altitudes
  • Retain the limits, set on its alkalinity or acidity, to prevent the onset of corrosion.

Oils are also required to remain chemically stable and to possess (and retain) a suitable viscosity during their useful life.

In general, every oil must:

  • Adequately wet the surface needing lubrication
  • Not evaporate too much in service
  • Not produce gum, sludge or carbon
  • Not damage the material with which it normally comes into contact.

In addition to protecting surfaces from corrosion, other properties of oils include the previously mentioned ability to wash away small particles of debris and to remove heat from system components. The heat can be as a result of the friction of motion, or from other sources such as the heat of combustion within a gas turbine or piston-type aero engine.

Oil provides lubrication in two distinct phases, which are referred to as:

  • ‘Boundary’ lubrication
  • ‘Fluid’ lubrication.

Boundary lubrication occurs in a stationary engine, when the oil tends to drain away from surfaces, leaving only an extremely thin film of oil, clinging to the microscopically ‘rough’ surfaces of
the metals.

Boundary lubrication will assist in the initial movement of one surface against another but, if it is not renewed, the surfaces will slide until the film disappears and seizure follows. Fluid lubrication is a thin, but continuous, film of oil, separating the moving surfaces, and so preventing metal to metal contact.

The oil also acts as a cushion between the surfaces. If, however, the oil is driven from the space between the surfaces, possibly due to excess loading, the fluid film is reduced to almost nothing and again, the surfaces will slide until eventual seizure occurs.

Generally, lubricating oils do not deteriorate during storage, but low-temperature greases can suffer and must be stored in a cool place. If water gets into either type of lubricant, the result can be very serious. Water contamination can cause:

  • Breakdown of normal properties under bearing loads
  • Oil additives rendered ineffective, giving a tendency to ‘sludge’
  • Failure of normal properties due to oil emulsification
  • Frothing of engine oil, which can cause excessive loss of oil through the system vents.

Many contaminants, such as rust and dust in suspension, may lead to blocking of oil passages or damage to moving parts. In grease, these solids produce a sort of grinding paste, which wears moving parts very quickly.
When oils and greases are in storage, a number of precautions will prevent subsequent problems. Good lubricant storage and usage demands that:

  • All containers have their lids firmly secured at all times when not in use
  • The majority of lubricants need to be stored in a cool plac
  • Different types or groups of lubricants must be kept apart, to prevent a risk of cross contamination
  • All equipment must be kept totally clean.

Grease Versus Oil:

Grease lubrication versus oil lubrication for bearings both have their own specific advantages:

Grease

  • Does not require a lubrication circulating system; pump, filter, sump, piping
  • Better for leakage control
  • Provides better seals against contaminants
  • Can remain in equipment longer
  • Lowers the risk of a dry start
  • Worn seals and connectors can retain grease better, which lowers the risk of lubricant starvation and leakage
  • Many grease lubricated bearings can operate for years without the need to repack the bearings.
  • A better choice where a continuous supply of oil cannot be maintained
  • Less consumption of the lubricant over time

Oil

  • Easier to drain and replace oil lubricants
  • Oiled bearing life can last longer than grease lubricated bearings.
  • Easier to control the amount of lubricant to use
  • Cleaner than grease due to capacity to carry away contaminants
  • Better cooling properties
  • Larger volume available allows for more available additive performance
  • Avoids the problems associated with proper regreasing at proper frequencies
  • Less energy consumption during operation
  • Better cold start properties

  1. Oil should be used for lubricating aircraft flight control cable because oil have a tendency to carry away contamination and debris and grease can not be used in those area that are prone to contamination and debris.
In Landing gear and wheel bearing grease should be used because landing gear and wheel bearings are vertical and oil will spill out of the bearings.
In engine bearings grease should be used because grease have the tendency to retain its property to at high temperatures, therefore won’t lose its properties even at high temperatures.

  2. Lubrication is done to reduce the wear between two surfaces. It can be done with grease or oil depending on the conditions of the surface or material on which it is being used.

The incorrect use of oil and grease can leave devastating effects for example if we use grease in an area where the material is exposed to dust can creat an abrasive paste which will wear the material rapidly. So care must be taken when using oil or grease within an object or on a material.

  3. Lubrication is the process of reducing friction and wear.
We can use oil in flight control cables because flight control cables are in the pulleys and they are also in the open surface so there should be dirt so we cannot use grease there in the ingress and dirt thats why we use oil in the flight control cables. In landing gears, wheel bearings and engine bearings we can use grease because we can use grease in vertical place because if we use oil then it will fall and it will results in spark.Grease can also stick and it is usefull for longer stay but if we use oil then we have to give extra system for oiling. We can use grease in landing gears and engine bearings because grease is chemically stable in high temperature it will not worn away.Grease is also better for leakege control it will not leak away but if we use oil it will leak away.
We can use lubrication by viewing AMM.

  4. Lubrication is a process for reducing friction and wear, through the introduction of an unguent between two moving surfaces.

Aircraft flight control cables used grease because where conditions are dirty, dusty or wet grease will provide a sealing medium which will prevent the entry of foreign matter into it.

Landing gear and wheel bearing also uses grease as a lubrication method because grease will stay in vertical bearings but oil will drain away. It will also be packed into bearing or housing which will provide sufficient lubrication for long periods of time.

Engine bearing uses oils as a lubrication method because oils adequately wet the surface that needs lubrication and it does not evaporate much in service.

The lubrication should be done according to the relevant maintenance manual.

  5. Lubrications are used to reduce wear and tear in equipments and can provide low friction surfaces.

FLIGHT CONTROL CABLES & LANDING AND WHEEL BEARING:
Lubricants used on flight control cables would usually be of grease type, A very good point of using grease on aircraft would be that it could be used in a dirty environment, a dusty environment or a wet environment as the control cables are mostly used on pulleys and are mostly openly used so grease can be a better lubricant then oil, because oil has many adverse effects of using it in a dirty, dusty or wet environment it can easily produce sludge or gum.
Landing gears would also most probably use grease because oil would usually drain off from a verticle surface leaving little or no oil behind and making it harder for the landing gears to retract or open.

    ENGINE BEARING
Engine bearings would most probably use the oil system because we can make a proper engine oil system which can regularly oil the engine bearings. Oils can draw away heat from a specific part or position. Oils can also bear high heat levels and can work in higher temperature environments. Oils also provides better inhibition and preservation of components or systems.

The correct type of lubrications used on different parts/components would be given in the relative AMM lrovided by the aircraft manufacturer.

  6. Lubrication reduce friction wear between moving parts. Lubrication is the process that tends to increase working life of an instrument.oil type lubrication are used for flight control cables because oil have the tendency to carry foreign particles and debris clogged with flight control cables. Grease lubrication is used in landing gears and wheel bearing grease will remain at their respective position and not get hardened at lower temperature at high altitudes. Greased remain chemically stable when it is heated especially on engine bearings.Grease lubricated bearing operate long time without repack the bearing.

  7. When two hard surfaces come in contact with each other it will produce friction which will decrease the productivity of that material, to remove this defect we use lubrications which will enhance the productivity and life of the material.
In aircraft flight control cables we use oil because oil can easily flow through the whole wire and if there are any debris or contamination it will be remove by passing oil through it and it also keep the cable away from corrosion.Oil has also good cooling properties.
In landing gears we use oil because if there is no oil in it, gears will produce friction and also become hot and will effect the continuity of flight operations. It will also use less energy during operation and in wheel bearings and engine bearings we use grease because oil flow through it and will not remain there for longer period of time, it will also control the temperature of the bearings and enhance the productivity and life of the bearings. The main advantage of grease is we don’t have to change grease after every short period of time.

  8. Lubrication is process in which we reduce the friction between two moving surface by using unguent like oil ,Greace for the long lasting of the moving surface and to prevent from corrosion.
In landing gears and wheel bearing we use Grease because in vertical bearing oil drain out so we use greace.moreover greace form a thick layer which can be used for long time after lubrication.
In engine bearing we use greace because it is stable at high temperature and in engine very high temp gases are exaust and oil don't remain stable at high temperature and another advantages is that it remains in the desired location.
In flight control cables we donot use greace because it can't use in contamination so we use oil because it contaminates easily.moreover it main advantages is that it don't produce gum and sludge because these effect the wires.
It is necessary that lubrication must be done at times so that moving surfaces prevents from the seizes of parts and do according to AMM for accurate lubrication.

  9. Lubrication is the process that Reduces the friction and wear between moving parts.
There are Two types of lubrication.
    Oil Type
    Grease Type
    Flight Control Cables:

The oil type lubrication is used in flight control Cables because it Carries away any debris or foreign particles from the control cables Grease can't be used here in control Cables because the contamination is likely to happen here.
Grease Type lubrication can be used on Engine bearings because it remains chemically stables when get heated and will stay at its Desired position.
Landing gears and Wheel Bearings used Grease for their lubrication Grease Packed in housing and bearing of wheel will provide specific lubrication for long Time.

  10. Lubrication is a process for reducing friction and wear, through the introduction of an urgent between two moving surfaces.

While oil is still used for some lightly loaded cables with high efficiency needs, greases
offer several advantages for control cable lubrication. A grease’s stay-in-place capability
mitigates leakage problems associated with oil. Greases also prevent wear better than
oils. Formulated by gelling a base oil with a thickener system, they act as a sponge
of oil, slowly releasing oil throughout the life of the cable and ensuring an adequate
    supply of lubricant during cycling

  11. Lubrication is a process for reducing friction and wear, through the introduction of an unguent between two moving surfaces of aircraft.
    Lubrication of Flight control cables
On aircraft control cables we will use grease on cables and fully. Grease will provide long life and protect for long time.
The key is to choose a lubricant that improves cable efficiency a measure of
how quickly, smoothly and easily the cable moves under a broad range of operating
conditions. This efficiency is directly related to how well a lubricant minimizes friction
between the cable and its liner, that is, the lubricant’s ability to wet and adhere to the
cable and liner surfaces under both test and standard operating conditions. Since most
tests involve constant rapid cycling, high film strength and the proper base oil viscosity
are essential to maintaining the right amount of lubricant where it is needed.

Landing gear lubricants generally include the hydraulic fluids used in larger volume in shock struts and wheel brakes, and lubricating greases used in smaller amounts in bearing blocks for the lubrication of hinge pins and ball joints.
the bearing and lubricant problems inherent in aircraft turbine engines; these problems are severe because of the occurrence of high rotative speeds and an extremely broad temperature. It is indicated that the materials currently used in rolling contact bearings for turbine engines are temperature limited to such an extent that completely new materials are now under consideration. Some data are presented which show acceptable friction and wear properties of some materials for rolling contact bearings and their cages at high speeds and at high temperatures. For liquid-lubricated-bearings, considerable improvement in the limiting speeds of rolling contact bearings appears possible with proper cage and bearing design. The design principle involves providing easy flow paths for the lubricant through the bearing.
An aircraft lubrication should be done according to AMM.
