Sub Module 7.19 : ABNORMAL EVENTS (ESSAY QUESTION)

LIGHTNING STRIKES

Lightning is the discharge of electricity in the atmosphere, usually between highly charged cloud formations, or between a charged cloud and the ground. If an aircraft is flying in the vicinity of the discharge or it is on the ground, the lightning may strike the aircraft. This will result in very high voltages and currents passing through the structure.

 Effects of a Lightning Strike:

Lightning strikes are likely to have two main effects on the aircraft
1: Strike damage where the discharge enters the aircraft. This will normally be on the extremities of the aircraft, the wing tips, nose cone and tail cone and on the leading edge of the wings and tail plane. The damage will usually be in the form of small circular holes, usually in clusters, and accompanied by burning or discoloration.
2:  Static discharge damage at the wing tips, trailing edges and antenna. The damage will be in the form of local pitting and burning. Bonding strips and static wicks may also disintegrate, due to the high charges.

EASA Module 7 Essay Question:

What Inspections and functional checks will you perform on the aircraft after the Aircraft is hit by lightening strike.

  2. If lightning strikes an airplane, a lightning-strike conditional inspection must be performed to locate the lightning-strike entrance and exit points. When looking at the areas of entrance and exit, maintenance personnel should examine the structure carefully to find all of the damage that has occurred.

Examine engine cowlings and engines for evidence of burning or pitting .As in control bearings , tracking of the engine bearings may have occured.

Examine fuselage and also rivets for burning or pitting

Check the landing gear if they were extended some damage may have occured

In the end you must check radio , radar and instruments, compasses , electrical circuits and flying controls. A bonding resistance check should also be done after all the examination of structure.

  3. Lightning is the discharge of electricity. It is formed when two charged cloud strike with each other.Lightning also hit the aircraft when it is in the air or when it is on the ground.
Lightning can effect the aircraft externally and internally also.Lightning can effect the structure of aircraft.so when we inspect the structure we should inspect bonding staps and static wics.Lightning can also effect antennas and radios. So when we inspect antennas and radios then we can do functional test of the radios and antennas that they are working properly or not.In inspection we can also check engine cowlings and we can also inspect engine bearings that they are working properly or not.
Structure should also be inspected that there will be no pitting or burning on the structure. If we are flying under 15000 feet then we should also check lower parts of tge landing gears that they are working propertly or not.Lightning strikes can also effect the navigation system so we should also perform swing test of compass.
During walkaround we should check for the pitting and burning on the aircraft.

  4. Lighting Strike Is the Discharge of Electricity in the atmosphere.
    INSPECTION:
Generally The Bonding strips and Static Discharge Wigs are inspected. Damage Bonding strips on Control surfaces may cause the damaging of the bearings of the Control Surfaces as a Result the Burning,Seizure of Bearing may occur and Cause the resistance of Moving Control Surfaces .
Other inspection may include the inspection of engine cowling and engine and The inspection of oil filter and chip detectors as Recommended by manufacturer. Inspection of External surfaces like Rivets for discolouration. In Case if the Landing Gears were extended Check should be made on the lower part of the gear.
    Functional Checks:
Functional Checks of Radio,Radar, Electric Circuits and Flying Controls For Proper Working Should be done.
The Inspection of Lighting Strike is Necessary To Protect The Aircraft From Any Worst Condition Produced by It.

  5. Lightning can be caused by heavily charged clouds and the heavily charged lightning can strike the aircraft. Lightning strike damage may result in resistance to movements of control, which can be checked by functional check of the controls. Additional checks may include

Examine engine cowling or engines for burning or pitting. According to manufacturer check oil filters and chip detectors for contamination, these checks should be repeated for specified number of hours. Also examine fuselage skin, rivets for burning and pitting. If landing gears was extended at the moment of lightning strike, some damage to the lower parts of landing gears may have occurred. Examine for signs of discharge.

After structural examination is finished. It will be necessary to do functional checks on radio, radar, instrument, compasses, flying control and electrical systems. These checks should be done after every lightning

  6. Lightening strike might have severe effects of an aircraft, Inspections and function checks can deduce the effects of the lightening strike.

Multiple checks are carried out on an aircraft after it has been hit by a lightening strike, just like engine and its cowlings to check for burning or pitting. Afterwards the oil filters and chip detectors should be checked, fuselage skin should be searched for pitting. If the landing gears were extended and lightening strike hits the aircraft we might want to check lower parts of the gear. Functional checks would be recommended for radio, navigation, radar and electrical circuits and a bonding resistance check should also be done.
External surfaces, internal Components, inspection and operational check of the radio and navigation system should be done.

Inspection and functional checks are important for an aircraft to be flyable again after a lightening strike.

  7. Ligtning is the discharge of electricity in the atmosphere , usually between highly charged cloud formation or between a charged cloud and the group.

In general bonding straps and static diacharge wicks should be inspected for damage.
Examine engine cowlings and wing tips for any visible damage.
It is possible that lightening effected the landing gears also so we we need to check the laƱding gears properly to make sure there is no any kind of damage.
Ligtening strike charge enters mostly from the extrimities of the plan such as wing tips, leading edge, trailing edge, ruddar, so we should inspect them properly.
Fuselage should be inspected properly specially rivats for any burnings.

Functional check of the electrical instruments should be performed after the check to make sure all the instruments incluing radio communication devices, display devices, are working properly.

  8. Lighting strike is discharge of electricity.
After lightning strike we will check those part which can be effected.
    Engine coil, radio equipment,
Suface, Bonding, static discharge wicks, electronic equipment
These equipment checks step by step.
Normally most wingtip, tail plan leading edge nose and antina hit by lightning strick.
If lightning strike area identify we should performe function test.
This inspection is most important yo avoid hazer.

  9. Lightning is a the discharge of electricity in the atmosphere usually between highly charged cloud formation and it will damage external body of a aircraft and electriical and nevigational instruments

Inspection: we have to check where lightning strike hit on the body of plane and check and we must have to follow the instructions according to manuals then we have to check that all electrical equipments are working properly and we have to check all the display are working and navigational system is working by functional testing .

Lightning strike can damage small electricical equipment so we have to check each and every equipment which can be effective by lightning strike possibly.
